Close Textual Analysis

This is a clip from the film Provoked, which is categorized in the drama genre. The clip i have chosen is relevant to my study because it shows when Kiranjit is being pushed down the stairs. This shows a stereotype of the asian male, of being controlling and strict.This is because when kiranjit continously asked Deepak where he is going he could not give her a straight answer then she assumed he was going to see a prostitute so she argued with him and confronted him.Telling him shes carrying his baby so in the clip you can see he had to take control of the situation and he done this by pushing her down the stairs.This made him believe he wa in control and had the power,therefore the patriarchal ideolodgy is shown within this clip.Therefore the asian males in the clip (deepak) is being shown and proved the stereotype. After Deepak pushes her he realises that hes done wrong,and like the stereotype he attempts to comfort her telling her ' he got angry'.

Kiranjit is dressed in an asian dress (suit) which shows her femininity and also her loyalty to her culture.Here she is seen wearing a blue suit with her scarf wrapped around her neck she looks innocent,her hair is tied back into a plait showing she is 'innocent'.Compared to her husband deepak who is very westernized and is wearing a vest this shows that he is in control seeing as even though he is wearing less clothes than Kiran he is still shown to have more power,because he asksd kiran to pass him her black shirt.When she asks why he is taking the money and what does he need it for he says he needs to pay bills and when shes asks where should she get the money from,he states to her get it from your brother.Showing that he does not care where she gets it from with his sarcastic comments.
The lighting in the bedroom scene is dimly lit and very dark, this goes along with the mood of the room. Kiran enters the room with a basket of clothing showing she is a housewife but when Deepak asks for the money we can see she has some control within the realtionship. Further more, there is non diegetic sound when kiran gets pushed down the stairs of a woman 'humming' similar to what kiran is going through which causes pain for the audience.
